The SmartKey Starter® has option settings that can be programmed in a couple different ways. This guide outlines the different methods and describes each options setting.
Below is a video demo of accessing settings menu through the steering wheel controls and instrument cluster
Note: The settings menu shown in the demo video is only compatible with vans that have the volume and mute button on the steering wheel. For vans without those buttons, you can change the remote start on/off (valet mode) setting by following these instructions. For the remaining settings, there is a USB programmer available on our website (click here)
Note: if SmartKey Starter® is power cycled (unplugged and plugged back in, vehicle loses power, etc), the settings will return to the default factory settings. Any settings changes made in the field will need to be changed again.
Option Settings and Descriptions:
Note regarding option settings: If the SmartKey Starter® is power cycled (unplugged and plugged back in or bypassed, vehicle battery dies or is reset/power cycled, or system is reset in any other way, the settings will return to the factory default settings (default settings outlined below). The default settings are Mid City Engineering’s “off the shelf” settings. Default settings may be changed and custom programmed by request. Keep in mind that if your system was purchased through an upfitter or OEM, your system may have different default settings than detailed below. If you did not purchase the system directly from Mid City Engineering and are not sure if you have “off the shelf” programming, please contact your dealer or upfitter for information regarding your default settings.
Rem Starter: On/Off
When this setting is Off (Rem Starter: Off), the remote start is disabled (valet mode). When this settings is On (Rem Starter: On), the remote / auto start can be activated.
ATTENTION: Valet mode is an important feature. Whenever the vehicle is being serviced, the system must be put in valet mode (Rem Starter: Off). If the vehicle is parked inside or in any other position where it is unsafe to auto start, it is the user’s / vehicle operator’s responsibility to put the system in valet mode.
Default: On
Timer Start: Off/On
Timer auto start. With this setting turned on, the SmartKey Starter® will auto start based on the 24 hour clock time set in the next setting. The start will run for the full cycle of the run time unless shut off manually. After the start and run cycle, this setting will revert back to off and must be turned back on to use the timer start again.
CAUTION: Turning this setting to On will cause the vehicle to start without intervention based on the timer start time setting. Do not turn this setting on unless you intend for the vehicle to start automatically.
Default: Off
Start Time: 00:00
This setting will determine what time the Timer Start setting will activate the auto start when Timer Start is turned on (previous setting). This is a 24 hour clock. For example, if the Timer Start is turned on and the Start Time is set to 00:00, the system will start the engine at 12AM (midnight). If Start Time is set to 14:00, the system will start the engine at 2PM. When the Timer Start is activated at the set Start Time the system will run the engine for the full Run Time cycle, unless turned off manually. Once the Timer Start is activated at the set Start Time, the Timer Start will be set back to off.
Default: 00:00 (midnight)
Heated Seats: 41F
Note: this setting will only apply to vehicles with OEM heated seats
When the SmartKey Starter® starts the engine, it will turn on the heated seats if the outside temperature is at or below the temperature set in this setting. For example, if it is set to 41F (stock setting), and the vehicle is started remotely when the outside temperature is at or below 41 degrees Fahrenheit, the system will automatically turn on the heated seats. Note: after key takeover, the heated seats will turn off and must be turned back on manually if desired.
Default: 41
Rear Defrost: 41F
When the SmartKey Starter® starts the engine, it will turn on the rear defroster if the outside temperature is at or below the temperature set in this setting. For example, if it is set to 41F (stock setting), and the vehicle is started remotely when the outside temperature is at or below 41 degrees Fahrenheit, the system will automatically turn on the rear defroster. Note: after key takeover, the rear defroster will turn off and must be turned back on manually if desired.
Default: 41
Cooled Seats: 75F
Note: this setting will only apply to vehicles with OEM cooled seats
When the SmartKey Starter® starts the engine, it will turn on the cooled seats if the outside temperature is at or above the temperature set in this setting. For example, if it is set to 75F (stock setting), and the vehicle is started remotely when the outside temperature is at or above 75 degrees Fahrenheit, the system will automatically turn on the cooled seats. Note: after key takeover, the cooled seats will turn off and must be turned back on manually if desired.
Default: 75
Flash Light: On/Off
This setting will determine if the parking lights will flash while the remote starter is running the engine. If this setting is turned on, the parking lights will flash every few seconds while the vehicle is auto started.
Default: On
Sensor Settings
Note: The following settings have to do with an optional digital security sensor. The SmartKey Starter® includes basic alarm and has the option to plug in a shock/tilt/tow sensor from Compustar (FT-DAS). This sensor will integrate with the included alarm and trigger the alarm (honk horn and flash lights) if shock (impact), vehicle tilt, or vehicle movement is detected while the alarm is armed. If you have 2-Way Compustar remotes and/or Compustar Drone or Directed Smart Start, you can receive alarm notifications as well. The FT-DAS sensor can be purchased on our website here.
The alarm will arm and disarm using the OEM key fob or any external remotes or smart phone applications that are connected to the SmartKey Starter®. It takes 30 seconds for the sensor to fully arm after alarm is activated.
The settings below only apply if you have the FT-DAS sensor plugged directly into the SmartKey Starter®, if you are using an external alarm, the sensor settings must be changed on the sensor.
Shock Sensor: On/Off
This setting determines if shock (impact) sensing is active when the alarm is armed.
Default: On
Tilt Sensor: On/Off
Determines if tilt sensing is turned active when the alarm is armed.
Default: On
Shock Level
This value determines the shock sensing sensitivity.
Warn level
This setting is not applicable at this time as warn away is not currently available.

Factory reset

Advanced Settings Menu
The SmartKey Starter has an advanced settings menu. Most settings in this menu should only be changed at the direction of Mid City Engineering technical support.
The following settings may be changed. Contact Mid City Engineering for instructions on accessing the advanced menu
Alarm Mode
The SmartKey Starter® includes a built in alarm (set to internal) with accessories such as digital sensor (see Sensor Settings above). An external Compustar or Directed alarm can also be added (set to external) or the alarm can be turned off (set to off).
Default: Internal
Idle RPM
This setting only applies to the SKSNG907RV
The SKSNG907RV includes high idle. The high idle will activate when the auto start starts the engine or can be turned on manually by engaging the parking brake and pulling the high beam stalk towards the rear of the vehicle. This setting will determine at what RPM the high idle will be activated (1250, 1500, 1750, 2000). The high idle can be turned off by changing this setting to off.
Default: 1500 (only applicable with SKSNG907RV)
Remote Engine Halt
This setting only applies if a Compustar Drone smart phone control is added.
The SmartKey Starter® has an anti-theft feature that can be activated using the Compustar Drone smart phone control module and the Compustar Drone smart phone app. The default setting is set to off.
If this setting is changed to ON, the Compustar Drone AUX 1 button can be used to disable and immobilize the vehicle.
If enabled (Remote Engine Halt: On) pressing AUX 1 button on the Drone will activate this anti-theft feature. After AUX 1 is pressed, the next time the vehicle reaches 0 MPH, the engine will shutdown and vehicle will be immobilized. The vehicle will remain immobile (until an UNLOCK command is sent from the Drone application.
Default: Off
