Owners Manual and User Guide for SKSNG SmartKey Starter®
CAUTION
It is the responsibility of the vehicle operator to ensure their vehicle is parked in a safe and responsible manner.
- When leaving the vehicle, it is the user's responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe location to start remotely. If the vehicle is indoors or any other location where it should not be running, it is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the system is put in valet mode (remote start off) before leaving the vehicle. See below for valet mode instructions.
- It is the user's responsibility to ensure that the remote starter is disabled or put into valet mode before servicing.
How to put SmartKey Starter® in valet mode (remote start off):
Using steering wheel controls and instrument cluster menu (click here)

Special note for servicing:
If performing major flash updates in service, it is possible for the update to get stuck.
If there is a problem encountered during a flash update or programming and the system had not been bypassed, simply bypassing the system will allow the update to be completed. A bypass jumper can be sent in order to bypass the system without removing the wiring harness.

Remote Start Operation:
Activation
- The remote start can be activated using either the 'Panic' button or a 'lock-unlock-lock' sequence from the OEM key fob. If the OEM key fob does not have a panic button, the remote start will be activated by the lock-unlock-lock sequence.
Run time: the default run time is 15 minutes. This setting can be changed in the menu. Please check menu options for current run time.
- Optional add-ons for remote start and alarm include smart phone control (Compustar Drone or Directed Smart Start) or extended range RF remotes (Compustar or Directed). Refer to external device operation instructions for details.ld be when starting the vehicle
Key takeover:
- After remote start, key takeover must be done to shift vehicle into gear. There are different key takeover procedures depending on the vehicle and ignition.
For key start vehicles (no push to start):
- Insert key and turn to 2nd position (ignition), two clicks. Note: avoid turning the key past the 2nd position (crank). Errors may occur is key is turned past the 2nd position.
- Parking lights will flash 3X, indicating key takeover
- Vehicle can be shifted into gear.
For push to start vehicles (excluding 2014+ S Class, 2015+ C Class Sedan, 2016+ C Class Coupe, 2016+ GLC):
- Press push to start button 1X without pressing brake pedal
- Parking lights will flash 3X, indicating key takeover
- Vehicle can be shifted into gear
For push to start 2014+ S Class, 2015+ C Class Sedan, 2016+ C Class Coupe, 2016+ GLC:
- Press brake pedal and press and release push to start button at same time. Release brake pedal after pressing push to start button
- Vehicle engine will shutdown and restart, indicating key takeover
- Vehicle can be shifted into gear
Options settings and programming:
- For vehicles with the volume and mute button on the steering wheel, there is a menu that can be accessed on the instrument cluster using the steering wheel controls. Click here for menu how-to guide.
- Turn vehicle to ACC position (first position) by pressing the push to start button 1X (without foot on brake).
- Using menu controls on steering wheel, press home button and use touch pad to select ‘RADIO’ on instrument cluster (radio information should show up on instrument cluster).
- Press and hold mute button (press in on volume scroll wheel) on steering wheel until you see ‘Rem Starter On/Off’ on instrument cluster. Release mute button.
- To change setting, press and release mute button (option setting will turn to next setting). Press and release mute button until desired option is selected.
- To scroll through menu, scroll volume down.
- To scroll back up through menu, scroll volume up.
- To save settings and exit menu, do not press any controls for about 7 seconds. Text on instrument cluster will say ‘Settings Saved’ and menu will exit.
- Cycle ignition to off position.
Menu tutorial for vehicles with the volume / mute buttons on the steering wheel:
- Note: if SmartKey Starter® is power cycled (unplugged and plugged back in, vehicle loses power, etc), the settings will return to the default factory settings. Any settings changes made in the field will need to be changed again.
*For vehicles without the volume and mute buttons on the steering wheel you can use the turn signal stalk to navigate the menu if the software version is 5.26 and up.
- Turn vehicle to ACC position (first position) by pressing the push to start button 1X (without foot on brake)

- Note: Some 907 Sprinters do not have the RADIO menu on the instrument cluster. SmartKey Starter® version 5.26 and above has the ability to program this feature on. Click here for programming instructions. The RADIO menu must be enabled in the instrument cluster in order to use this options settings menu procedure.
- Pull and hold high beam/turn signal stalk toward you until you see ‘Rem Starter On/Off’ on instrument cluster. Release stalk to neutral position.
- To change setting, pull high beam/turn signal stalk toward you and release (option setting will turn to next setting). Pull stalk towards you and release until desired option is selected.
- To scroll through menu, press turn signal down slightly and release to neutral position (brief left turn signal)
- To scroll back up through menu press turn signal up slightly and release to neutral position (brief right turn signal)
- To save settings and exit menu, do not press any controls for about 7 seconds. Text on instrument cluster will say ‘Settings Saved’ and menu will exit.
- Cycle ignition to off position

Four Year Limited Warranty
Mid City Engineering, LLC. warrants to the original purchaser that this product shall be free of defects in material and workmanship under normal use and circumstances for the period of (4) four years from date of purchase. When the original purchaser returns the product to the retail store with an accompanying bill of sale where it was purchased within the warranty period, after evaluation, Mid City Engineering, LLC. will, at its option, repair or replace the product.
Mid City Engineering, LLC. is not responsible or liable for any damages whatsoever, including but not limited to any consequential damages, incidental damages, damages for loss of time, loss of earnings, commercial loss, loss of economic opportunity and the like that may or may not have resulted from the installation or operation of the Smartkey Starter®. Not withstanding the above, manufacturer does offer a limited warranty to replace or repair the control module as described above.
The product warranty is automatically void if the date code and/or serial number is defaced, missing, or altered or product is tampered with. This warranty will not be valid unless you have an accompanying bill of sale.
